How To Make Chyawanprash at Home?
Chyawanprash tastes sweet and sour at the same time. The taste is dominated by honey, ghee, and amla, and the smell by ghee and other spices, including sandalwood, cinnamon, and cardamom.
Ingredients
- Amla: 750 gm
- Sarkara or Sugar: 750 gm
- Madhu or Honey: 85 gm
- Ghee: 250 gm
- Sesame or Til oil: 75ml
Decoction Ingredients (powdered form):
- Cardamom or Elaichi: 25 gm
- Guduchi Satva: 12 gm
- Vanshalochan: 12 gm
- Triphala: 12 gm
- Chandan or Sandalwood: 10 gm
- Gaja Pippali or Long Pepper: 10 gm
- Sunthi or Ginger: 10 gm
- Dashamoolas: 5 gm
- Prabal Bhasma: 5 gm
- Mrigashruga Bhasma: 5 gm
- Nagkesar (Cobras Saffron or Indian Rose Chestnut): 5 gm
- Tej Patra or Bay Leaves: 5 gm
- Laung or Cloves: 5gm
- Dalchini or Cinnamon: 5gm
- Maricha or Pepper: 5gm
How To Prepare:
Boil and grind Amla
- Clean the gooseberries with water.
- Boil the gooseberries with 1 cup of water. Cover with a lid and cook for 10 minutes on low flame.
- After it is cooked, let it cool for 5 minutes. Remove the seeds from gooseberries. Grind it to a fine paste.
Prepare the herbs
- Take all the dry herbs mentioned in ingredients to the mixer grinder jar except dry grapes.
- Crush the hard-to-grind herbs such as nutmeg, kadukkai, cinnamon stick, narukkumulam, and dry ginger using mortar and pestle.
- Then add them to a mixer jar and grind to a fine powder. Sieve the powder.
- Add the remaining sieve to a mixer jar, dry grapes, and grind. Add 1/2 cup water and grind to a fine paste.
Making Chyawanprash
- Now heat the iron kadai and add ghee. After ghee is melted, add ground gooseberry paste. Mix pleasingly until ghee is entirely absorbed.
- Then add crushed palm jaggery to it. Mix well until frothy goes off.
- Now add the dry ground grape paste. Finally, add the ground herbs powder.
- Mix and cook until all the water is absorbed from the herbs’ paste.
- Add sesame oil. Mix and persist in cooking until the oil is fully absorbed.
- Now, add honey. Mix for 2 minutes and turn off the heat. After it is cooled down, transfer it to an airtight jar.
Storing
- Store it in an air-tight glass container preferably, and use a dry spoon to take it. It will remain fine at room temperature for at least 5 to 6 months.
Notes To keep in Mind:
- Use iron kadai to respond with gooseberries vitamin C; chyawanprash will be supplemented with iron content when prepared and cooled in it.
- If you do not get palm jaggery, you can substitute it with sugar or jaggery. If you use sugar, take it at 300g as it is sweeter than palm jaggery.
- No necessity to add any excess water while grinding amla.
- Use a dry spoon to take out.
- If you keep it in an airtight container and use a dry spoon, it will stay good for at least 5 to 6 months at room temperature.
- Finally, you can add more honey if you want to add it, as per your taste.
Chyawanprash Dosage
